Watching competitor Shopify stores through their public product feed
Most Shopify stores expose a public product feed at /products.json. It lists products, variants and prices, which is the same information shown on the store itself.
What you can learn
- new products as they launch
- price changes and sales
- which variants exist
Doing it respectfully
Read the feed occasionally, not every minute. Use what you learn to make your own decisions; do not copy descriptions or photos.
How VirtualPA does it
Add competitors and their feed URLs on the Competitors page. VirtualPA reads the feeds with no key and shows changes in your dashboard, and it can watch competitors' ads through Meta's Ad Library. Read the dashboard tour.
Turn it into action
A competitor's sale is a prompt to check your own margin before you match it. The Braivex guide to break-even ROAS shows the sums. If you run several shops and want their Google reviews in one place, Loculens does that.
What to record each week
- New products and their price points
- Products that disappeared, which may mean sold out or discontinued
- Price changes on products similar to yours
A simple weekly note of these three is enough. Over a season it shows you how competitors plan launches and sales.
